Oncology deals with prevention, diagnosis, therapy and aftercare of malignant tumors.
Malignant tumors have been described since antiquity. However, they could not be treated surgically before the 18th century. Since the 20th century, radio- and chemotherapy is used as well to act against malignant tumors.
Nowadays, cancer is one of the main causes of death and can appear in various human organs. Because of that, oncology is shaped by interdisciplinary collaboration of different medical areas and literature regarding the topic is in good supply of ZB MED – Information Centre for Life Sciences.
